Arthur Lydiard

The Lydiard Method

Principles, not formulas, are the key to successful training.

Arthur Lydiard’s methodology employs Five Key Principles. These principles underscore the huge success of this methodology since the 1950’s to present time, and enable the training to be effectively applied to any individual athlete, no matter their ability or fitness level.

Optimal Training Principles:

  1. Maximize aerobic capacity - your ability to generate energy is determined by how efficiently you can process oxygen.

  2. Become feeling-based - Tune into and learn to accurately read and trust your body’s own internal feedback systems.

  3. Practice response-regulated workouts - Make your efforts count. Always balance key workouts with recovery runs for effective continued improvement.

  4. Sequentially develop your energy systems using the Lydiard Phases. Each training phase builds on the one preceding it.

  5. Apply correct timing for a peak performance on race day, and long-term fitness from year to year.

Testimonials

This 15-hour training program has been the best experience of my 50+ running career. It has come at a time in my life when I needed more confidence in my training plans. It has revolutionized my coaching philosophy and has elevated my own running experience. I am looking forward to the next levels of this certification.

This was by far the best running class I’ve ever taken, and I’ve taken several through USATF, NFHS (the National Federation of State High School Associations), USTFCCCA (US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association), and a few more.

The programs was just such a joy to do. I learnt so much from both you and Colin and I loved our chats about the “grey areas” where it can go either way! I think you and Colin make a wonderful teaching duo and your energy is fabulous.
